Iyengar Yoga is a method of teaching yoga that gives the student time to align the mind with the movement of the physical body. Attention while moving into an asana creates stability and ability to stay in the pose with confidence.
Staying in the poses for a little time builds stamina both mentally and physically.
To quote BKS Iyengar:
Asana is not physical exercise, as commonly stated. Asana develops intelligence in each individual to foster a powerful understanding of ourselves and others. Asana helps develop that latent quality of attention and awareness, and brings it to the surface…You develop knowledge of yourself, of your body, of your mind, and of your very consciousness.
